On Trace of the Tide, he says: “Trace of the Tide is the place I love more than any other, while the army and the settlers are what I hate most. Whenever I passed through there, I would see both at once. To this day, I still cannot put into words the conflicting emotions I felt in those moments.
A Palestinian poet and author, born in Rafah in 1965. He works as cultural affairs editor at the Palestinian News and Information Agency, WAFA. From 2000 to 2007, he served as managing editor of Ru’ya, a specialised research journal, and until 1999 as editorial secretary of the literary magazine Ishtar. In 1998, he was a founding member of the editorial board of Al-Ghirbal magazine in Ramallah. In 2022, he received the Palestine Prize for Literature in poetry for his collection A Strange Moon Above the Flute Maker. He also writes children’s literature and has published extensively in the field. He has written more than one hundred songs, as well as several plays and studies on Palestinian history, and has produced numerous translations. His poetry collections include: A Strange Moon Above the Flute Maker (2022); Nothing Walks in This Dream (2015); So That the Gypsy Woman Will Not Love You (2012); As Horses Change (first edition, 2011; second edition, 2013); Such Is the Habit of Cities (2009); You Still Resemble Yourself (2004); Therefore (2000); Texts Unrelated to the Matter (1999); Thus the Caliph Begins (1996); and Rafah: An Alphabet of Distance and Memory (1992), co-authored with the poet Othman Hussein.
